SOPHIA L. RAITHEL
HELLO!
I am a conservation ecologist and currently a biodiversity consultant for private development in Latin America and the Caribbean. My research interests focus on conservation issues but span across disciplines of community ecology, population biology, wildlife-human interactions and quantitative modeling.

I am interested in evaluating the influence of human actions, and industry and agricultural practices on species abundance, movement, and community interactions. Guided by science, I hope to create innovative strategies to address the challenge of balancing human natural resource needs with the long-term protection of our environment. I use both field monitoring methods, remote sensing, and spatial and quantitative modeling to analyze results that can be used to inform conservation management decisions.
How do animals respond to long-term or short-term environmental change?
How is forest loss impacting local communities?
My Research Interests
How will our food systems change with a loss of pollinators?
Some animal and plant species have shown to have an adaptive behavioral response and resiliency change, how can we use this knowledge to inform conservation decisions?
Communities that depend on forests for food and/or their livelihood are currently being impacted by a growing consumer demand. How can we mitigate the threat that poverty imposes on people worldwide?
Seed dispersers and pollinators are declining globally in response to agricultural practices, forest loss and climate change, how will the change in their abundance and behavior impact our global food needs.
